Name: Marcus Gaylor
Iwi/Hapu: Tainui/Ngaati Hikairo
Born and raised in New Zealand (Aotearoa), and coming from a Maori family I have always been interested in my culture and the history of my country.
To try and understand both better I started carving taonga (treasures) and with developing my bone carving skills my knowledge of my culture and country grew as well.
I carve many different pieces and designs, they are mostly based on elements found in Maori art form, the flowing lines to represent those found in nature around us and the mythological spiritual guardians of the Sky, Earth and Sea each one has its own essence and Mana (pride, spirit).
I carve many unique pieces for friends and clients and am happy to put there ideas and designs in bone.
Based in Germany it gives me great pride to be able to share my culture with the rest of the world using the symbols of Aotearoa and Maoridom.
