Bone Carving has been around for centuries in many cultures and the tools used vary widely.
I base my carving on elements found in Maori design and technique, flowing lines to represent lines found in nature and all around us as well has many of the most recognizable Pacific designs such as the Fish hook, Whale Tail and Maori mythological guardian figures are also a concept I try and include in my work.
The tools I use in my carvings vary depending on the piece but I always have on hand a set of files, three bone gravers a small motor hand piece with a selection of cutting and shaping burrs and lots and lots of sandpaper as well as patience and hard work.
Here are a couple of pictures of some of the process.
